Tubing & Casing Pipe

Tubing Thread Types: API 5CT NUE, EUE, IJ and Premium Connections Guide

For oil and gas completion design, tubing thread connection is one of the most critical decisions. The wrong thread selection may lead to thread galling, leakage, tensile failure and costly well intervention. All standard production tubing threads are governed by API Spec 5CT and API Spec 5B, while premium connections are proprietary high-performance designs for harsh well conditions.

This guide breaks down the main tubing thread types, their working principles, advantages and suitable applications, to help you select the correct connection for your RFQ and well design.

1. NUE (Non-Upset End) Tubing

NUE, short for Non-Upset End, is the basic API round thread tubing.

  • Thread: 10 TPI API round thread
  • Design feature: No upset forging on pipe ends. Threads are machined directly on the original pipe wall thickness
  • Pros: Low cost, simple manufacturing, compact outer dimension
  • Cons: Joint efficiency is lower than pipe body; limited tensile and pressure capacity
  • Typical applications: Shallow wells, low-pressure liquid production wells, light-duty service. NUE tubing is less widely specified in modern oilfield projects compared with EUE

2. EUE (External Upset End) Tubing

EUE (External Upset End) is the most popular API tubing connection globally.

  • Thread: 8 TPI API round thread
  • Design feature: The pipe pin end is externally upset (forged thicker) before threading. The reinforced section protects the thread area and improves joint strength
  • Pros: Higher joint tensile strength, stable sealing for oil and water production, widely stocked, easy to source and inspect
  • Cons: Standard API round thread is mainly liquid-tight, not recommended for high-pressure gas wells without extra qualification
  • Typical applications: Conventional oil wells, medium-depth production strings, sucker rod pumping wells, general onshore completion. This is the default option for most tubing RFQs from Africa, Middle East and Central Asia markets

3. IJ (Integral Joint) Tubing

IJ stands for Integral Joint tubing, also known as no-coupling tubing.

  • Design feature: One end is internal upset box, the other end is external upset pin. No separate steel coupling is required. Two pipe ends make up directly
  • Pros: Small overall outer diameter, larger drift ID, less annular space occupation, ideal for restricted clearance
  • Cons: Special production process, higher price than standard coupled tubing; limited inventory
  • Typical applications: Slimhole wells, small annulus, coiled tubing matching, special downhole completion assembly

4. Premium Tubing Connections

Premium connections are proprietary, high-performance tubing joints beyond basic API round threads, such as VAM TOP, VAM 21, Hydril 511, TP-JC, Tenaris Blue and FOX.

  • Core feature: Independent metal-to-metal primary seal, shoulder torque stop, optimized thread profile
  • Pros: Gas-tight sealing, excellent resistance to gas pressure, H₂S / CO₂ sour service, high tension, compression and cyclic load; low galling risk with proper torque and thread compound
  • Cons: Higher cost, strict make-up torque control, special inspection and running procedure, usually requires factory qualification
  • Typical applicationsgh-pressure gas wells, sour wells following NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156, deep and ultra-deep wells, high-injection pressure wells

Quick Comparison Table

Connection Thread Upset Coupling Best For
NUE 10 TPI Round No upset Required Shallow, low-cost liquid wells
EUE 8 TPI Round External upset Required Standard production tubing (most common)
IJ API round profile Integral upset No coupling Slimhole, restricted clearance
Premium Proprietary Custom Optional HPHT, sour service, gas-tight requirement

How to Choose the Right Tubing Thread for Your Project

  1. Fluid type: Oil/water production can use API NUE/EUE; gas wells, especially high-pressure gas, normally require premium gas-tight connections
  2. Well depth and load: Deeper wells with high hanging tension prefer EUE or premium connections
  3. Corrosion environment: Sour service with H₂S must select NACE-qualified premium connections together with matching steel grades like L80, C90, T95
  4. Downhole clearance: Slimhole or tight annulus, consider IJ integral joint tubing
  5. Procurement & budget: EUE has the best balance of performance, lead time and cost; premium connections add significant budget and inspection requirements
