Global Railway Rail Standards: GB, EN 13674, UIC, AREMA and GOST Differences

Railway steel rails are manufactured and inspected under different regional and international standards worldwide. For rail procurement, engineering construction, quality inspection and global railway project cooperation, it is essential to clarify the differences between the five mainstream rail standards: Chinese GB standard, European EN 13674, UIC international standard, North American AREMA standard, and CIS GOST standard. These standards differ greatly in rail profile dimensions, steel grades, mechanical performance, application scenarios and inspection specifications, and most rail products under different standards are not interchangeable in actual track installation.

1. EN 13674 (European Standard)

EN 13674 is the most widely adopted official railway rail standard for global commercial and engineering projects, serving as the unified technical specification for European Union railway systems. It has completely replaced the old UIC 860 standard for formal product acceptance and delivery inspection.

The standard covers full technical requirements for rail dimensions, material composition, mechanical properties, heat treatment and non-destructive testing. Its typical rail profiles include 54E1 (UIC54) and 60E1 (UIC60), which are the most common rail types for international passenger and general freight lines. Classic steel grades include R260, R260Mn, R320Cr and high-performance R350HT head-hardened rail.

Known for strict tolerance control, high steel cleanliness requirements and standardized ultrasonic inspection rules, EN 13674 is the preferred standard for most Middle Eastern, African and European overseas railway projects.

2. UIC (International Union of Railways Standard)

UIC standards, represented by UIC 860, were once the universal global guideline for railway rail profiles and specifications. However, it is important to note that UIC is no longer an independent acceptance standard. All technical specifications of UIC 860 have been fully integrated into EN 13674.

At present, UIC only provides technical guidelines and industry recommendations rather than mandatory delivery inspection criteria. The well-known UIC54 and UIC60 rail names are consistent with EN 54E1 and 60E1 profiles, so UIC now serves only as a reference concept in international rail trade, not a certification basis for product quality.

3. GB/T 2585 (Chinese National Standard)

GB/T 2585-2021 is the latest authoritative standard for Chinese railway rails, applicable to China’s high-speed railways, conventional passenger lines and heavy-haul freight railways, and widely used in Chinese foreign aid and export railway projects.

Its mainstream rail profiles are P50, P60 and P75, with core steel grades U71Mn for conventional lines and U75V for head-hardened heavy-haul tracks. Compared with international standards, GB standards have stricter requirements on rail fixed-length delivery (such as 100-meter long rails), flatness tolerance, impurity control and full-scale ultrasonic testing. It balances the dual performance requirements of high-speed operation and heavy-load bearing, making it highly adaptable for complex railway operation scenarios.

4. AREMA (American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association)

AREMA is the exclusive railway rail standard for North America, focusing on heavy-haul freight railway systems. Different from European and Chinese metric standards, AREMA adopts imperial unit measurement, with rail models named by weight per yard, such as 115RE, 132RE and 136RE.

AREMA rails are specially designed for ultra-heavy axle loads and long-distance freight transportation, prioritizing wear resistance, impact resistance and structural stability. Its rail profile, base size and tread curvature are completely different from EN and GB standard rails. As a result, AREMA rails cannot be interchanged with Euro or Chinese rails, and corresponding fasteners, rail joints and base plates are not universal. It is the mandatory standard for all railway projects in the United States, Canada and most Latin American countries.

5. GOST (CIS Russian Standard)

GOST R 51685 is the core rail standard for Russia and Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries, covering 1520mm broad-gauge railway systems. The mainstream rail models are P50, P65 and P75, which are similar to Chinese GB model naming but differ in actual profile tolerance and performance parameters.

The most prominent feature of GOST standard rails is the ultra-high low-temperature toughness requirement. Aiming at the severe cold climate in Eurasian continental regions, the standard strictly controls the low-temperature impact performance of rail steel to effectively prevent cold brittle fracture and ensure the safe operation of railways in extreme low-temperature environments. It is the only accepted standard for railway procurement and construction in Russia, Central Asia and Eastern European CIS countries.

Core Differences & Selection Guide

In international rail trade and engineering applications, standard selection follows clear regional and scenario rules. EN 13674 is the universal choice for global general railway projects. GB standard rails are cost-effective and high-quality options for high-speed and heavy-haul projects. AREMA rails are exclusive for North American heavy freight lines. GOST rails are mandatory for 1520mm broad-gauge cold-region projects. UIC standards only provide technical references without binding acceptance force.

It is critical to confirm the required standard before rail procurement, as mismatched rail profiles will lead to incompatibility with existing track fasteners, sleepers and track geometry, causing construction failures and potential operational safety hazards.
